Following on the heels of 2015’s Uncoiled, Of Earth and Sun have returned with a new album A Consuming Fire. This new release builds on the (considerable) strengths of the previous album, drawing the listener into its cathartic, purifying maelström of sound and emotion over the course of its five tracks. The subterranean catacomb imagery of the video for “Outpouring” perfectly captures the supernatural atmosphere of the track and connects to its creation, since Of Earth and Sun makes substantial use of bone trumpets, as well as vocals (of a sort) and drum machines.
Of Earth and Sun is the project of Matthew Hunzeker of Colorado, an exploration of what he refers to as “chromatic drones”, intersecting with the world of dark ambient and power electronics and is certainly one of the most unusual and intriguing new acts to cross our path here at Heathen Harvest. From the artist’s bio:
Of Earth And Sun presents an alchemical key; fire as a purifying element in transcendental form. Through the vibrant soul of the sound into the material world in form, is born a liberating element of spiritual impulse, re harmonizing one’s body, soul and mind through Matthew’s trace state of consciousness during live performances, this being the magical composition which creates Of Earth And Sun’s sound, and in this way captivates one’s soul to divinity, reappearing later with an eerie atmosphere of sacred and esoteric knowledge, opening the door of wisdom, as a rite after death; to prepare for death and rebirth.
