This decade-old collaboration between PS Stamps Back and Anal Vissi is a Minor reissue of material originally published on Greece’s 1000+1 TiLt. In the current era, with the insane amount of music that is published daily, ten years really is a lot of time, so I find that labels are still investing in reviving worthy older records is a promising pursuit by any measure. Especially when they put their reissues on better formats than the original (in this case, moving from CD-R to 12″ LP).
The curiously titled Homefucking Is Killing Prostitution has a rather interesting backstory. PS Stamps Back and Anal Vissi, who were both part of the experimental project Adaptories during its four-year existence, were about to have a rehearsal and nobody showed up. They didn’t have enough drugs to kill the time, so they decided to just jam together. This happened on November 14th, 2004, and it still sounds good.
All of this background information meshes well with the ‘concept’, which, let’s be honest, Homefucking Is Killing Prostitution is clearly a joke and not meant to be taken as a serious theme. As you can guess from the track list, the album is slightly childish through mockery, but it’s so blatant that it’s fun as well—just like a rainy afternoon with no drugs and just two laptops full of weird sounds. The music on the album is far from being as infantile as the track titles suggest, however.
Homefucking Is Killing Prostitution is, at its core, an extremely rhythmic album, but it has also soaked up influences from various other beat-based genres (and not only) including abstract techno, industrial, IDM, and of course drone ambient and other minimal, atmospheric styles of music.
Generally, the album is minimalist and based around the tension of crescendos, whether it be accomplished through gradually expanding beat patterns or evolving atmospheres; occasionally, it can actually be both. It deals not so much with the development of ideas, but rather focuses on their repetition. Doing so allows the listener to dig really deep into the music’s details and the whole structure upon which the sound layers are built.
The rhythmic elements of this electronic beast are not necessarily centered around ‘orthodox’ percussion, but mostly the likes of which are more deformed and glitchy, which is perhaps the most memorable element from the album. A brilliant work from 2005, Homefucking Is Killing Prostitution was given a second life because ‘Broke Musicians of the World Unite’, ‘Better Unemployed than Artist’, and my personal highlight and total hit single, ‘Priests Fuck Little Boys!’, are a must-hear and a must-spin if you’re a DJ—especially if you have a crowd that is more adventurous and intelligent.
