Bobby Beausoleil – The Lucifer Rising Suite

The Lucifer Rising Suite

The Lucifer Rising Suite

Bobby BeauSoleil is a former member of Charles Manson’s “Family” and is currently serving a life sentence in prison for murder. He is also an extremely talented musician and artist who, in the late 1970s, while incarcerated, composed and recorded the soundtrack for Kenneth Anger’s experimental occult film Lucifer Rising.

The Lucifer Rising Suite is the deluxe presentation of this original motion picture soundtrack. The box set includes four vinyl LPs at 33 RPM, two fold-out posters, and a four-page booklet. What makes this third edition the seminal issuing of this release is that all four LPs are on multi-colored vinyl, the colors of which have been personally selected by BeauSoleil to correspond to the matching artwork he has designed for the printed inner sleeves that house the records, along with designing the art on the center labels for each respective disc. The largest of the fold-out posters also features full-color artwork by BeauSoleil while the booklet contains essays about the roots of these recordings written by Dennis Dread (who also designed part of the box art and the other poster) and Michael Moynihan (who has written extensively about BeauSoleil before in the book Apocalypse Culture 2), along with an essay written by BeauSoleil himself.

What truly sets The Lucifer Rising Suite apart from its predecessors is that half of the material presented here is never-before-heard sessions that have been personally selected by BeauSoleil. In addition to the original motion picture soundtrack, the recordings in the box set include the 1967 version of the soundtrack recorded when BeauSoleil was a member of the Haight-Ashbury based band The Magick Powerhouse of Oz in San Francisco as well as several sessions recorded with The Freedom Orchestra in prison, all of which has been meticulously re-mastered from the source tapes.

The Lucifer Rising Suite is an acid-fried fusion of psychedelic and progressive rock taking on an indefinably arcane quality when taken out of the context of the film. At times, parts of the soundtrack seem reminiscent of the scoring from the film Fantastic Planet while other moments echo with composer Enno Morricone’s themes for spaghetti westerns. Even more astounding is the fact that Bobby BeauSoleil recorded nearly all of this music in his jail cell between 1976 and 1979 with guitars, keyboards, and recording equipment that he handmade himself. Whether you simply listen to the music or dive head first into the occult experience that is Lucifer Rising, each undertaking is a memorable endeavor.

[Editor’s Note:  This LP Boxset is now sold out from AJNA, but has been reissued on CD and digitally here.  The album is also “available at a discounted price” if purchased from Beausoleil’s website here.]

Chad Hensley

A skilled reporter on cultural extremes in music and art, Bram Stoker Award-nominated author Chad Hensley saw several years of his writing on underground subjects as EsoTerra: The Journal of Extreme Culture through Creation Books in 2011 and available at Amazon. EsoTerra has recently seen its first French translation through the publisher Camion Noir. He and his wife run the vinyl-only record label Last Hurrah Records. Check out the official Esoterra website for more information on his writing, or you can read our review of the compendium here.
