I feel so ashamed that I did not know who Adel Souto is until now. But nevertheless very excited and grateful that I know finally! It seems Mr. Souto is a veteran in music period, having begun in the mid eighties as a bass player and vocalist for bands in the vein of Punk, but his path eventually led him to filthy ass Brooklyn, New York. Here, he would discover the literal underground, i.e. the very famous subway tunnels as well as some choice spots under buildings. These modern-cave environments inspired Adel to begin field-recording. The result is one of the most impressive, honest, vivid, and soulful things I have ever heard.
Now, the cave reference here is a meaningful one because this man has created a very wonderful balance in his work between the passivity of metal and concrete structures, bringing forth its voice, and yet, manipulating such into very human, tribal, simplistic rhythms and sequences, even background drones and atmospheres. The work is truly excellent. It leaves nothing wanting. Well, if what your heart is set on is something very much similar to Einstürzende Neubauten, Test Dept., and even Psychic TV.
What makes this album so very worth it to me and also quite deserving of more praise than my own is that this is a work that in almost no way relies on melody, but is almost guaranteed to engulf you, to put you right into that disgusting and desolate tunnel. Here, you can find peace, solace, and though you might still be encased in iron and cement, you are certainly much closer to the womb of the Earth. It is your human curiosity and innate need for self-expression that drives you to pick up that empty forty and clank out a great beat, and Mr. S seems to be a working example of this principle, this natural connection.
Every single track in question here is worth your time. Especially “An Unbelievable Delete”, which is the most ritualistic of all six, very weighty with the creepy factor, and a sordid joy to listen to. The album is available for free! Just hit the bandcamp link up above. Amazing work. A sincere pleasure to have reviewed for you.
